Joseph F. X. Zahra writes... The news of the death of family members, friends and acquaintances saddens our heart. The news of the loss of Joe Agius last Saturday (Aug. 6) saddened me in a special way. He was for me more than a friend and a former colleague. He had a special influence on me and my work. Joe Agius was the classic gentleman. A civil servant of the old professional school, a loyal and diligent public officer seasoned with long years of experience including a sojourn in King Idris’s Libya in the 1960s. On his return to Malta he made his way up to senior appointments including head of bulk buying during the Mintoff administration. He left public office to join the Federation of Industries in the early 1980s. Very few people know that Joe was one of the founders of Misco, the independent Malta-based consultancy, and a leading inspiration to me during its early years. Joe’s deep intellect, swiftness to careful analysis, sense of impartiality and calculation strengthened the foundation of this enterprise. He was a careful and attentive reader with a strong sense of interpretation and opinion. His was a brilliant mind and he was endowed with the skill of fine writing and...

A previous edition of the Malta Artisans Market at Palazzo Parisio.

The beautiful gardens of Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar will once again play host to the summer edition of the Malta Artisan Market being held next weekend. Just as Maltese language, culture and food have been largely influenced by different people who at some stage occupied the islands, so too have Malta’s arts and crafts. This has left the archipelago with a legacy of traditional arts, crafts and artisan foods, including, among others, filigree jewellery, lacemaking, weaving and honey. In turn, these today influence the contemporary artisan products that are on offer at the market. While several souvenir shops also stock items produced in other countries, the Malta Artisan Market observes a strict policy whereby only local artisans producing in Malta can participate. The visitor can meet the artisans in person at their stalls and discuss their work, thereby knowing they are buying an authentic Malta-produced artisan product. Attendees can browse through an original array of garden ornaments, jewellery, hand-sewn goods, woodworks, concrete furniture, handmade chocolate, candles, food delicacies and much more in the balmy evening atmosphere of the magical Palazzo. There will also be...

Those who like to take in Malta’s natural surroundings on foot can join a ramble of the Lippija area this Sunday. The walk is built around the enjoyment of the environment, socialising, relaxing and keeping fit. This Sunday’s trek is being held on Malta’s northwest coast. The rendezvous point is the Mġarr church at 7pm from where the group will proceed by car to the starting point just outside the village. Departure from the church is scheduled for 7.30pm sharp. The route takes the participants through open country, across garigue land to a vantage point overlooking Ġnejna bay from where they may enjoy the enchanting setting sun and panoramic vistas stretching all the way to Gozo. The walk will also take in various interesting historical features. As dusk sets in, torches are switched on and the convoy of ramblers will continue on its way along the undulating circular course through some exciting topography. The Sunday evening treks are organised by Leisure Ventures and are free of charge. They are held away from the urban sprawl and on open high ground, as much as possible, to make the most of the pleasant, cool, summer evening breezes. They are suitable for anyone aged 13 and...

Comino tower open to visitors next weekend

St Mary’s Tower on Comino is open when the flag is flying.

The 1618 St Mary’s Tower on Comino will be packed with action during the Comino Fest taking place on August 19 and 20. The tower was built and financed by Grand Master Alof de Wignacourt through the sale of the brushwood on the island and from the profits made by the resettled farmers. Also referred to as the Comino Tower, it was part of a system of towers providing defence and communication between the Ċittadella in Gozo and Mdina in Malta, something the Maltese people had been asking for since 1418. The site chosen for the St Mary’s Tower was some 80 metres above sea level. Its design was square in plan with four corner turrets. The bulk is 12 metres high and stands on a plinth some eight metres high. A three-metre wide strip was laid along the top surface of the plinth to enable the defenders to move easily to any endangered point. The walls of the tower are about six metres thick and the four corner turrets are extended perpendicularly and crowned with a battlement top. It seems likely that during the British period the tower was used as an isolation hospital at some point, while the lower chamber was converted into a stable for animals. The St Mary’s Tower was used as...

ITS students cooked recipes submitted by Italian and Polish students as part of the eTwinning project.

An eTwinning project led by ITS has been recognised as good practice with a quality label by the Maltese eTwinning National Support Service. ‘A Bite of History: Culinary and Cultural Exchange’ ran with the participation of two partners from Italy – I.I.S. Caterina Caniana in Bergamo and Convitto Nazionale Statale ‘R. Bonghi’ in Lucera – and one from Poland, the Zespół Szkół Technicznych in Mielec. This was the first time that ITS took part in eTwinning, which is part of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Commission. Around 102 students aged 16 to 19 and teachers from the four partnering countries took part, with 16 from the ITS foundation course. The aims of the project were to bring together vocational schools specialising in tourism studies. Students learned about the hospitality background in each country, with special emphasis on culinary and cultural similarities or differences, while using digital tools to research and communicate. Maltese students’ recipes included traditional Maltese dishes, which were quite a novelty for most foreign students, especially the Polish, while the Italians could recognise the influence of Italian cuisine on the way the Maltese...
