The fourth edition of Triq Cinemoon Festival kicks off on Thursday. The aim of this festival is rather unusual as it is the prospective audience that gets to pick the films to be screened. The general theme this summer is ‘In Motion’. Each week, the organisers will propose three films on their Facebook page which in some way depict this theme. The film obtaining the most votes is then shown on Thursday in St John’s Street, Valletta, outside Café Society. The venue is a street that leads to the Grand Harbour . The audience can view the film seated on the stairs under the moonlight over a glass of wine. The programme is kept secret until a few days before the screening when the choices are put up on a dedicated event page every week with links to their trailers. Voting closes on Thursday morning. The winning film that will actually be screened that evening will be announced around midday. Film ratings change depending on the chosen title. This year, in keeping with the theme, August 11 is dedicated to flying, August 18 to driving, August 25 to running away, September 8 to sailing, September 15 to dancing and the final night, September 22, to time travelling. The films proposed...

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel, one of Australia’s most respected musicians, is giving a concert in Malta on Wednesday as part of his It’s Never Too Late tour. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians across the world. A household name in his native Australia, Emmanuel has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. His unique style, which he calls finger style, is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all 10 fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass and drum parts, he plays all that – and more – on one guitar. American guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this “fingerpicker” style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel’s biggest fans. The concert is taking place at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, Valletta. It is rated 17+. Doors open at 7.30pm. Tickets may be bought online from www.ticketline.com.mt. For more information, call 7920 5402.

Denis Soler (2)

Frederick Zammit Maempel and John Samut Tagliaferro write: Denis Soler was our good and trusted friend for 50-odd years. We met as university students joining the course of medicine, and by divine providence we were thrown together for the next five years in the same students group. It was immediately clear that the good Lord had bestowed upon Denis a more than generous dollop of fine attributes, not least his imposing figure and keen intellect, and he employed these to the full. Denis was hard-working and focused, but also had a sense of humour and a contagious liking for harmless mischief, with an easy propensity to chuckle, and his demeanour helped ease the demanding five-year stint of undergraduate medical study. He graduated in 1973 at the top end of class and decided that general practice was his calling. He soon established a highly successful practice, principally in the Sliema area, and was much loved by his many patients, not only because he was a true professional, a caring physician, knowledgeable and meticulous, but also because of his pleasant character and evident humanity. Denis was a leader and a great organiser, determined on establishing family practice in...

A spectacular fireworks display will shoot off tonight, on the eve of the feast of St Lawrence, patron saint of Vittoriosa. This pyrotechnic show is now in its ninth edition and has progressed in leaps and bounds, with the Orzella Fireworks of Italy joining the event six years ago to provide its own firework designs. A series of colourful displays will be let off from a huge barge moored some 200 metres between the promontories of Vittoriosa and Kalkara in the Grand Harbour. The programme includes a mix of pyro-musical displays synchronised to different scores, traditional fireworks, including the multi-break crackered shells (known as murtali tal-beraq in Maltese), and single-firework colour shots, including the multi-break coloured shells (murtali tal-kulur). The first display will be let off at 10pm with the programme for the evening expected to last one hour. The suggested best viewing location is the Vittoriosa promontory, down by the seaside, close to the Regatta Club. A new perspective on Maltese history

Mark Camilleri’s new book, A Materialist Revision of Maltese History: 870 – 1919, will be launched tonight at the Fortress Builders – Fortifications Interpretation Centre, Valletta, at 7.30pm. The book is a critical reading of Maltese history influenced by Hegelian philosophy and Marxist materialism. It poses new critical perspectives based on previously unknown historical data. Some interesting primary sources of note, which will be revealed for the first time, include the police logbooks of the early 20th century. This book’s focus on the mind and material conditions of the ‘ordinary’ citizen offers a fresh look at Maltese history. It is history as it is, without the grand narratives and beautiful anecdotes which make it novel and glorious. The author claims that there is in reality nothing that glorious about Maltese history. On the contrary, Maltese history was sad, dark, tragic and bleak. The Maltese lived in misery, poverty, insularity and ignorance and their survival in terms of wealth and security was dependent on their rulers. Mr Camilleri holds that the Maltese elite were only concerned with making easy profits rather than with contributing to the overall development...

The Astronomical Society of Malta invites all interested parties to an evening under the stars, on the night of the Perseid meteor shower’s peak. This will take place tomorrow at 9pm in Triq il-Grottli, Xgħajra (see map for exact location). The society will be setting up telescopes through which attendees will be able to observe the moon and Saturn. Participants are more than welcome to bring along their own telescopes and binoculars, although this is not necessary. The meteor shower itself is, however, best observed with the naked eye. While there is no age limit for participants, the area might be unsafe for children, who should therefore by accompanied by adults at all times. Fireworks Spectacular, the St Mary Fireworks Factory’s renowned show, is once again being held on the eve of the feast of the Assumption in Mqabba on Sunday. This year’s event is characterised by a pyromusical display (fireworks synchronised to music) which includes various unique and innovative effects. The main attraction is the Tower of Light, a display fired from a 58-metre-high steel structure creating unique effects. It was the St Mary Fireworks group that started this trend back in 2011 with a 30-metre-high tower. They then went on to win a national record in 2013 with a 38-metre structure. Apart from almost doubling the size of this steel structure, this year sees a record amount of over 10,000 ignitors to light up different types of fireworks in the display. For the first time in Malta, two different firing systems will light up the show – PyroDigit and FireOne. The display will also include the traditional Maltese single shot shells known as beraq pront and multi-break coloured shells known as murtali tal-kulur. The fireworks show starts at 9.30pm with the suggested best viewing area being Santa Marija Convoy Street (Mqabba bypass). A spectacular mechanised ground...
