The Gozo Philatelic Society has set up its own showcase at Il-Ħaġar Museum in St George’s Square, Victoria, and is currently hosting the exhibition entitled Gran Castello Redux – 75 years of Citadel Philately.
This ties in with the recently concluded Ċittadella restoration project. The Victoria Citadel was in fact the first site in Gozo to feature on a Maltese stamp and was included within the King George VI definitives.
Numerous stamps following this have continued to depict the
Citadel, with the latest issued in
June this year showing a modern design of the landmark surrounded by a spring countryside.
The display at the museum features both mint stamps and covers, with the latter specially designed by Anthony Grech. There is also a 1551 commemoration as well as a further separate artistic impression of the Ċittadella which was incorporated into another cover. Visitors at the exhibition can pick up an information leaflet which details the Gozo postal services.
• The exhibition runs until the end of September. The museum is open Monday to Sunday, from 9am to 5pm and entrance is free of charge.
