A new public address system has been installed at St Dominic parish church in Valletta. The old system has been in place since the 1950s and the church administration felt the need to install a new one to give a good service to the faithful. The friars commissioned the Alfa Group of Pozzuoli, Naples, to try a new system and after two months’ trial the friars, who were satisfied with the result, decided to go for it. The system cost €8,500 and for this reason the administration is urging those who can help to make a donation. A down payment of €2,500 has already been made. Those who would like to help are to call parish priest Michael Camilleri on 9988 3297 or e-mail fr.michael23@gmail.com. The parish is organising a dinner with tombola at the Christian Doctrine centre on Saturday at 7pm in aid of the restoration of St Dominic church. Tickets (adults €10, children €5) are available from the usual helpers.

President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca presented the trophy at the end of a Mass celebrated at St Dominic’s church, Rabat on February 3. Also present were the President’s husband Edgar, APS chairman Emanuel Delia and George Hyzler, chairman of the selection board. Mr Borg Cumbo, 25, works with an insurance company. In 2012, he went with friends on a youth exchange in Finland, where they were encouraged to reflect on the realities of life beyond our shores. The experience enkindled in them an interest to do missionary work. From here evolved the idea of setting up Karibu! Malta (welcome in Swahili). Mr Borg Cumbo got involved in the project to encourage youngsters to go to Kenya under the Youth in Action scheme but their application for funding was unsuccessful. The...

The 36th edition of the annual scale exhibition, organised by the Society for Scale Modellers – IPMS Malta and sponsored by Gasan Mamo Insurance, was held at the Malta Maritime Museum in Vittoriosa. This event brought together numerous miniature scale models of various subjects, including aircraft, ships, armour and tanks, historical and fantasy figurines, motor vehicles and dioramas, scenes that depict a story. “We are pleased to be associated with the organisation of this year’s annual scale model exhibition since this event helps increase the level of scale modelling to the highest possible standard and to transform the perception from that of a hobby for amateurs to that of a valued and esteemed art form,” said general manager Mark Mamo. The models displayed during this event – produced to the highest standard and researched for authenticity and realism – featured an artistic slant. Members of the society donated money in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund and the club contributed by matching the amount collected. Other monetary donations were collected thanks to the generosity of the public. The funds will be forwarded to the Malta Community Chest Fund, which falls...

John Magro and his son Nicholas presenting a donation to Agostinian prior Ray Francalanza as a sign of gratitude for their collaboration on the project.

This year, the Three Hills brand will be featuring set of 60 Maltese surnames in an exercise that involved months of work and research. Each can will be featuring information about the origins of a particular surname, when it was first documented and an explanation about its coat of arms. The research was carried out by Joe Borg, a genealogist with over 20 years’ experience in Maltese heraldry, and Simon Mercieca, a senior lecturer in the Faculty of Arts, University of Malta, specialising in family name research and genealogy. The descriptions on the cans were abridged and edited by Mgr Joseph Bezzina, a well-known Maltese historian and national archivist. The coats of arms for the 60 surnames date back to the early 1800s. These were all hand-painted drawings found in the library of the Agostinian Friars in Rabat. Photography was entrusted to Daniel Cilia.

Class 5B at the Lyceum, Ħamrun graduated in 1974. Since then, two of the cohort have passed on and a number have moved to other lands. It was difficult to get the whole class together again, but 18 out of the 24 students originally in the class, including one from the UK and another from the US, did manage to get together on February 3, 43 years after leaving each other. They met for a dinner at Sharma, Mdina, the restaurant actually belonging to one of the cohort. They found that they had certainly grown older, many of them had grown quite a lot balder, but they found inside themselves the 16-year-old school boys they once were, bubbling out at the sight of each other. And they even managed to have a class photo taken at the end of it all.

A talk analysing the socio-economic and cultural conditions prevalent during Victor Pasmore’s time in Malta in the latter half of the 20th century is being held today in Valletta. Pasmore (born Edwin John Victor) was a British artist and architect who pioneered the development of abstract art in Britain in the 1940s and 1950s. He passed away in Malta in 1998. The gallery hosted by the Central Bank of Malta, where the talk is being held, houses a permanent exhibition of works discovered in Pasmore’s home in Gudja, as well as in his residence in Blackheath, London. One often hears of art and artistic processes being discussed in terms of ‘the social determination of art’ or ‘the artistic representation of reality’. During tonight’s talk, social scientist and lecturer Valerie Visanich will unpack these statements and others as she looks at redefining and, ultimately, presenting alternatives to engaging with Pasmore’s artistic output. She will also introduce the socio-personal relations that were interlaced throughout every aspect of Pasmore’s life and career, particularly the instrumental role and presence of his wife and muse, Wendy Blood. ■ The talk is being held tonight at the...

Monet’s Impression, Sunrise, 1872.

A new documentary based entirely on Claude Monet’s personal letters is screening tonight in St Julian’s. I, Claude Monet reveals Monet the artist, businessman and lover as it explores the fascinating inner life of one of the world’s most famous artists. Based on 3,000 surviving letters, the film reveals a tumultuous inner life marked by moments of intense depression and euphoric creation, offering a complex portrait of this beloved artist. The documentary also features over 100 of Monet’s paintings filmed in high definition, providing a unique window into his emotional and creative life. Brought to life by acclaimed actor Henry Goodman, Monet’s letters record his journey from a prodigiously talented teenager to the grand old man of the arts. The letters record remarkable encounters – from the painter Eugene Boudin, who he met as an enthusiastic amateur, to Prime Minister Georges Clemenceau, with whom he struck up a friendship as an elderly man. Many letters confront Monet’s despair, depression and even attempted suicide. In equal measure his correspondence celebrates the joys of painting and the natural world, inspired by his travels across Europe. In order to capture the...
