The Retired Educators Section of the MUT launched its programme of activities for 2016-7 when it organised an outing to the recently restored Citadel in Victoria. Almost 50 participants attended the outing. The group visited the Cathedral, the Old Prison, the Natural Science Museum, the Folklore Museum and the newly-opened silos. The group also viewed a documentary on the Citadel’s history at the Visitors Centre. This was followed by a stroll in the restored ditch which in the past served to protect Gozitans from pirate attacks. The group later congregated in Pjazza Savina where they found transport waiting to take them to Marsalforn for a meal at Lantern Restaurant. The group were then taken to Mġarr Harbour to catch the ferry to Malta and return home.

October 15, 2016 will surely be a date to remember in the St Aloysius’ College Scout Group’s history calendar, as the group officially celebrated its 100th year. On this occasion, President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca praised the Scouts’ movement and their commitment on achieving such an important milestone. A new hall was also inaugurated for the centenary, which will be used for Scouts so that they learn essential life skills such as first aid, knotting, setting up a fire and map reading. A commemorative plaque was unveiled in the presence of College rector Jimmy Bartolo at the group’s headquarters in Birkirkara, after which the Scouts organised a gang show with the involvement of all the group’s sections (Cub Scouts, Scouts, Ventures and Rovers). The Group Scout Leader Edward Cassola explained that a lot of planning and coordination between the group’s various sections was involved to come up with a show of singing, music and acting. He added that “the show was truly enjoyed by all those who attended. The storyline was about two Scouts who travel through time from one era to another, and each time, discover one of the origins of scouting. The show included a selection of...

The second edition of ‘The Bubble 2016 – Festival of Love’, in aid of green and humanitarian causes, was held recently at the Elysium in Għajn Tuffieħa, a beautiful green area perched on top of Golden Bay. Music, art, co-creation and awareness are at the heart of this positive occurrence. The intention behind this event was to create awareness about the environment, the arts and the community by taking people away from their mundane, everyday routine. This year’s event, sponsored by GSD Marketing Ltd – distributors of The Coca-Cola Company brands produced in Malta by The General Soft Drinks Co. Ltd – also highlighted The Coca-Cola Foundation’s Alteraqua project. The main aim of the Alteraqua project includes mobilising non-conventional water resources to increase water harvesting and availability in a sustainable, cost-effective way and promote a new water culture, at both a local and a national level. “As a company, we are committed to supporting the community through activities that raise the public’s awareness and conscience to live sustainably by empowering disadvantaged societies and respecting the environment,” said GSD Marketing Ltd general manager Brian Galea. “Visitors...

Asphar reunion in Malta

The Asphar group at one of their dinners in Malta.

This October Malta’s population numbers were temporarily boosted by the arrival of many descendants of a remarkable man, John Joseph Fatullah Hannah Asphar, who met for a historic reunion. Long-lost cousins travelled from as far afield as the US, Australia and the UK to join those already at home in Malta. Their ancestor, John Asphar, arrived in Malta with his mother in 1854 as a result of a chance meeting with a Maltese missionary priest, Don Pietro Formosa, in Calcutta. Mr Asphar was attracted to the idea of settling in England but dreaded the thought of the cold weather. His own father was the youngest of 24 children of Hannah Botros Asphar and had left his birthplace in Aleppo, Syria to travel to Calcutta, where he set up a trading business. John Joseph Fatullah Hannah married a Maltese woman, Angelica Bonavia, and they lived in Gudja when they first arrived. The main altar in that parish church was donated by Angelica, and she and her husband were buried in the church, as was the custom in those days. Philanthropy was a way of life for the Asphars; John Joseph’s father had donated the land on which the Loreto Entally orphanage in Calcutta was built in 1843. Five children...

‘A colourful journey’, an exhibition held at Palazzo De Piro, featured a collection of bespoke jewellery pieces designed by Yana and her team at Yana’s Jewellery. A wide range of hand-assembled, hand-wired and hand-made fashion accessories encapsulated the vibrance of Bali. From Ubud to Uluwatu and everywhere in between, one will see that the magnificent colours, detailed textures and intricate fabrics have been the inspiration in the choice of materials and combinations. The ‘Shell Pendant’ was an essential element in this collection. Balinese artisans believe shells allow one to keep on enjoying the summer aura, long after the winter months have set in.
