George Preca exhibition

Strong, bold and vigorous, George Preca’s exhibition A Bold Expressionist reveals an artist who does not paint what the eye sees but what the mind perceives. He is, however, purely figurative with a keen sense of the surreal, naive and metaphysical. At times gentle, delicate and elegant, Preca (1958) is an incurable expressionist. His expression overflows with emotion, an outpouring of sentiment and feeling tinged with pathos and empathy for humanity travelling the same path he treads, facing the same vicissitudes, his way of life, his philosophy. His choice of subject or theme, though common, hides patient reflection and deep contemplation. Surface texture is only a subtle veneer for deeper emotion and feeling. His work is not about physical reality, though tangible and material. It is about thought and intellect. His subjects vary from sacred art to profane, from still life to landscape, from fictional male to female portraits, to horses, to lush trees and woods, to everyday themes, to moods and sentiments. A self-taught artist, Preca stamps his work with his reflective nature and he is most surreal in his still life. He uses pencil, oil and soft pastel and acrylics as well as...

Tarkovsky screening of Mirror

Perhaps the most autobiographical work of Russian cinema master Andrei Tarkovsky, Mirror is a reflection of his own broken childhood and the fate of the Russian people. This 1975 film stirred the imagination of Muscovites when it was originally screened. The New York Times then reported that the film “is delighting, puzzling… [it] instantly became the talk of film-going intellectuals because, they say, nothing quite like Mirror has ever been made before by a Soviet director”. Built on multiple layers, the film intertwines personal and social relationships with childhood dreams and nightmares through original poetry penned and read by the poet Arseny Tarkovsky, the director’s father. The film is being screened as part of the Sculpting Time: Andrei Tarkovsky Retrospective remastered in new digital prints. The screening of arthouse, festival and foreign films is a foremost priority in the Spazju Kreattiv cinema programme. Furthermore, the culturally diverse nature of such productions conforms to the strategy of the creativity centre in promoting different aspects related to the concept of identity, diversity and legacy. The Tarkovsky screenings are an offshoot of a major...

A musical with a difference is set to take to the stage this weekend exploring old Maltese myths and fairy tales, scored to some of the biggest hits in rock music. Set in the 16th century, Belliegħa tells the story of three children from the Inguanez family, Lucia, Maria and Tinu. Lucia is the eldest and betrothed to a young noble, Mikiel, despite being secretly in love with Ġamri, the baker’s son. Disaster strikes when Maria and Tinu, the two younger children, go missing, pulled down a well by Belliegħa. The children must be rescued, but the delicate balance between the two worlds is upset and a few dark secrets are uncovered in the process. The myth of Belliegħa is of a legendary well dweller used to scare young children into staying away from wells. Other creatures from the underworld make their appearance including Sarangu (the sackman), Babaw (the bogeyman) and Saħħara (the witch). The 60-strong cast will perform the songs live in their entirety, accompanied by a band made up of some of the island’s best musicians. The audience can expect to hear smash hits from the likes of Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd and Queen to name a few. ■ Belliegħa is being staged today and tomorrow at...
