Movie night under the stars at the Palazzo
Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar is hosting its second ladies’ movie night on Sunday, August 28.
This time the film scheduled is Mamma Mia!, a 2008 romantic musical comedy adapted from the 1999 West End/2001 Broadway musical of the same name.
Based on the songs of the immensely successful Swedish pop group Abba, with additional music composed by Abba member Benny Andersson, the film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd who later went on to direct The Iron Lady, a biopic of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
The film centres around Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) who sets off a chain of events when she posts wedding invitations to three men who could all potentially be her father. Meryl Streep stars as Sophie’s mother Donna Sheridan with Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgård in the roles of her ex-suitors and possible fathers to Sophie. Julie Walters and Christine Baranski play the roles of Donna’s best friends.
While the film received mixed reviews from critics, it was a worldwide smash, certified as the biggest grossing film ever at the UK box office by the end of 2008.
The film naturally showcases several of Abba’s hit songs such as Money, Money, Money, Mamma...

Summer Carnival also in Marsascala
The Malta Summer Carnival 2016 will be held this weekend in Buġibba and, for the first time, in Marsascala.
Taking place from 7pm to 11pm, tomorrow and on Saturday activities will be concentrated in Buġibba, while a carnival parade will be held along the Marsascala promenade on Sunday from 7pm onwards.
Friday and Saturday will see the traditional ġostra (grease pole) at the bay below Buġibba Square. The game dates back to the period of the Knights of St John, with the word derived from the Italian ‘giostra’, meaning tournament. Locally, however, it refers to a competition in which a large pole is mounted on to a barge or pier and smeared with grease and animal fat. Participants then take turns to climb up the pole to reach flags placed at its top and claim a prize, while those who slip fall into the sea.
The activity will then continue with a défilé of 11 new floats, created specifically for this event, together with the participation of seven dance companies who will perform during the carnival parade and in the main square in their carnival costumes.
Tomorrow, the défilé starts from the jetty area and passes along the promenade. On Saturday, it starts from the parking area at...

Jazz in the garden
The newly-refurbished Madliena Lodge is hosting live jazz sessions outdoors in the garden lounge on Wednesdays and Sundays. Songstress Angie Vella Zarb features on selected dates, performing a large repertoire of jazz standards in swing, bossa nova, blues and ballad styles.
Tomorrow she will sing as part of a trio accompanied by Karl Galea (guitar) and Oliver Dega - briele (double bass). On Wednesday, and Wednesday, September 7 (eve of a public holiday), the sessions will be pared down to an intimate voice and guitar duo. The trio will return on Sunday, September 18.

Dominican anniversary concert in Vittoriosa
The Dominican Order in Vittoriosa is this year celebrating two important anniversaries: the 800th anniversary of the foundation of the Order of Preachers and the 125th anniversary of the foundation of The Prince of Wales Own Band.
The Dominicans settled in Vittoriosa in 1528 after they were given a chapel dedicated to The Annunciation which belonged to some lay members. Two years later, the Knights of the Order of St John arrived in Malta and declared Vittoriosa as the capital city.
They took over the parish church and in the middle of the following century, the Dominican church dedicated to The Annunciation served as the city’s parish church. In 1941, during World War II, enemy bombs destroyed both the church of the Annunciation and the priory. These were rebuilt 20 years later.
To mark the Dominican anniversaries, the Prince of Wales Own Band, under its musical director Mro Emmanuel Spagnol, is presenting a concert of Maltese music at the Church of the Annunciation in Vittoriosa tomorrow. The pieces that will be played include a composition by Mro Spagnol himself, a score dating back to 1917 composed by Mro Paċifiku Scicluna and an antiphon to St Dominic. Soloists Rosabelle...

Marc Nair: busy telling stories
As part of the run-up to this year’s 11th edition of the Malta Mediterranean Literature Festival, Inizjamed is presenting a number of special events which are open to the public and free of charge. On Tuesday, sociologist Anna Zammit will interview Marc Nair, the eclectic writer, performer and photographer from Singapore.
Singapore is undoubtedly a story of economic and technological success. Maltese governments, past and present, have looked at Singapore as a model to emulate. Both countries are island city states which are densely populated ex-British colonies that share an economic structure, which includes tourism, the maritime and gaming industries, and financial services.
However, the Singaporeans are considered to have a stricter work ethic and greater discipline than the average Maltese. This encounter will explore to what extent Singapore has been a success story and how ordinary people cope with the globalised rat race.
Lee Kuan Yew, the founder of modern Singapore, wrote in From Third World to First that it was “…crucial to keep Singapore’s multilingual, multicultural, multi-religious society, and make it… dynamic enough to compete in world markets”. Thus, like the...
