Talk at Victor Pasmore Gallery

The first talk of the Victor Pasmore Gallery lecture series, Presenting Pasmore, will tackle the restlessness that came to be representative of the artist. “I prophesy the art of Pasmore will not stand still,” Clive Bell predicted back in 1945. This is, in fact, the connecting thread weaving through the numerous collective and solo exhibitions which Pasmore participated in and which Theresa Vella will be tracing tomorrow. Pasmore was a British artist and architect and one of the first proponents of abstract art in Britain in the 1940s and 1950s. He bought a house and studio in Gudja in the 1960s and lived in Malta until his death in 1998. The lecture will feature the trail leading up to the 1970 exhibition at the Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce, as well as Pasmore’s unique role as a curator in the 1990 Artist’s Eye Exhibition held at the National Gallery in London, presenting us with the intriguing views of a modern abstract artist on the works of Leonardo, Piero della Francesca, Titian, Rembrandt and Turner, besides other old masters. ■ The lecture is taking place tomorrow at 6.30pm at the Victor Pasmore Gallery near the Central Bank Annexe in Valletta.
