Nadine Malouf plays the title role in Salomé.

Spazju Kreattiv is showing live the National Theatre’s staging of Salomé at The Old Vic Theatre in London. From her role as the nameless beheader of John the Baptist in the well-known biblical account, to Oscar Wilde’s erotic retelling of the story in his play Salomé, this new production employs and explores the cultural references which make up this intriguing character, and boldly works to flesh out the desires and motivations of a powerful female figure who only exists on the fringes of history and culture. In this radical retelling, directed by Yaël Farber, a young girl named Salomé (Nadine Malouf) is caught in the backfire of a politically unstable desert nation and becomes a beacon of resistance, who must navigate through the turbulent politics of her time with wisdom, grit and grace. Originally staged at Washington’s Shakespeare Theatre in 2015, this latest offering from Farber has received rave reviews, and was nominated for 10 Helen Hayes Awards – of which it won seven. The play will be broadcast live at St James Cavalier tonight at 8pm. There will be an encore on Saturday, July 8, at 7.30pm.
