Alfred Conti Borda writes: A serious, upright and dedi­cated family man are only a few words of how to best appraise this fervent, religious gentleman. I met Charles for the first time in 1976 when we started our first degree course in arts together at the University in 1976. He impressed me from the outset with his honesty and smartness of attire. We kept in contact and met again at our Alma Mater in 1995 to follow the DEAM course in preparation for school headship, but Charles delved deeper in Trade Union participation. He started by being an MUT delegate, subsequently being elected council member, a capacity in which he served for a great number of years. He then advanced to being general secretary of the Confederation of the Malta Trade Unions and concurrently was a regular contributor of the educational magazine Sagħtar and was its executive director up to the last edition. Being a member of various literary organisations, Charles was a prolific writer of Maltese poetry. He was also involved with the Cana movement and did voluntary work in helping in the administration of the Fgura church, and above all, with the Malta Union of Teachers right up to the very end.
